External Wall Insulation

Spray foam insulation can be used in a number of ways on external walls.

Foam medium density spray foam insulation can be used in masonry cavity walls and behind panelized systems.

Either Foam or low density spray foam insulation can be used to insulate the inner side of exterior walls.

Common Problems with External Wall Insulation – Cavity
External wall cavities and panelized systems are sometimes insulated with foam board or rock wool – here are some issues resulting from using those insulation types:

  • Up to 40% of energy loss is due to uncontrolled air leakage.
  • Up to 99% of moisture travels in the air and can build up inside a building through daily activities. If moisture carried by air is allowed to move through the walls it can condense within the walls leading to related problems such as mold.
  • Drafts causing hot/cold spots.
  • Some insulation types are damaged by water and moisture, which may compromise their performance.
  • Insulation damage during construction and damage by other trades.
  • Joints and penetrations are difficult and time-consuming to insulate, and subject to human error.
  • Difficulty insulating unusual shapes using an inflexible material.

Common Problems with Exterior Walls – Insulating on the Inside
Exterior walls may be insulated from the inside with foam board or rock wool – here are some issues resulting from using those insulation types:

  • Up to 40% of energy loss is due to uncontrolled air leakage.
  • Up to 99% of moisture travels in the air and can build up inside a building through daily activities. If moisture carried by air is allowed to move through the walls it can condense within the walls leading to related problems such as mold.
  • Joints and penetrations are difficult and time-consuming to insulate, and subject to human error.
  • Insulation can be damaged by water or other moisture, which may compromise its performance.
  • Insulation damage during construction and damage by other trades.
  • Insulation may be damaged by pests.

Benefits of Spray Foam for Exterior Wall Insulation

  • Increased energy efficiency.
  • Improved indoor air quality (IAQ).
  • Attenuates noise (Foam LD-C-50 attenuates noise more than Foam)
  • Easily insulates edges and penetrations – expands to fill holes.
  • Can be sprayed against most types of substrate.
  • Foam rejects bulk water; Foam has <5% water absorption.
  • Holds its strength when exposed to water.
  • Not easily damaged.
  • Not a source of food for mould or pests.
